Penguins 0 Games 12
A tough season is over and the winless Penguins have come
a long way since their first game. May 7th sees the start
of a new season for the Penguins in the Monday night league
at the outdoor Poway Sportsplex. Goals will be scored and
games will be won.

Jinx 6 Penguins 2
With barely enough players for a team the Penguins got off to
an excellent start taking a one goal lead and holding onto it
for most of the first period. Confusion over the ever changing
schedule resulted in three of the players arriving on the bench
only moments before the half-time break. By this time the usual
momentum switch had occurred and Jinx were beginning to look
the better team. Three goals were conceded before the score
once again looked promising with the Penguins only 3-2 down
with less than 10 minutes remaining. A shorthanded play was
survived but at full strength the team was still unable to
clear the puck from the defensive zone or create more than
a handful of scoring opportunities. The usual six goals were
finally put past the Penguins goalie, but Jinx must consider
themselves lucky to have won by a four goal margin.

Weasels 8 Penguins 0
A disappointing result for an ever improving team that just
ran out of gas. Ron's scoring streak was ended with the
Weasels holding the Penguins to their first shut out.
In the first 20 minutes the team defended well and were
unlucky to go into the break two goals down. With only
two guys on the bench, the Penguins began to fade in the
second period against the more experienced Weasels. Matt
was kept extremely busy between the pipes taking a total
of 48 shots on goal and once again saved the team from a
much heavier defeat.
The Penguins managed only 8 shots on goal and were
struggling to strike a balance between good defense and
effective offense. With the opposition skating faster
backwards than the newcomers could skate forwards, this
game goes down as another small step in the learning
process. The team was not disheartened by the result
and although they face another tough game next week
against the experienced Jinx, they are optimistic for
victories against Wolfpack, Blitzkrieg and Swedish
Meatballs.

Wolfpack 6 Penguins 2
A much improved Polexis Penguins put on a fine display
of begginer hockey for the nearly packed La Mesa Hockey
Rink. With the crowd bursting at the seems, well at least
some particular individuals, the Penguins played a fine
first half. A debut goal from Rich Yumul gave hope of a
first victory to even the most pessimistic supporters.
The first 20 minutes ended with the birds trailing 2 goals
to 1, but this week not looking outclassed or outplayed.
The players were falling infrequently, barring some
spectacular defensive dives, and some of them even looked
like they had skated before.
The second half saw some good scoring opportunities that
kept the frantic crowd cheering and cursing, but luck was
not a penguin tonight. The Wolfpack were penalized multiple
times, but the special teams were unable to capitalize on
the powerplays. As the teams tired, the Wolfpack's experience
and numbers allowed them to pull ahead. Ron's goal pulled
the score back to 4-2, but the Wolves immediately responded
and followed with the final goal of the game with one second
left on the clock.
The final score betrayed the gritty performance of the PPs
and they are sure to be trying even harder for their first
win next week against the evil Weasels.

Weasels 6 Penguins 1
With their hardest game out of the way, the Polexis Penguins
are ready for business. Although the Penguins went down 6-1
to the Weasels, they showed a lot of promise in the second
half and are confident that their biggest defeat is behind
them now. The Polexis hockey virgins showed up for a friendly
game, but quickly found out that their opponents had other ideas.
Stick checking was something they had only tasted when playing
against Joe, but now it was all around them. Joe put in his usual
gritty performance and managed to crack the perspex barrier
with his butt. Praise the hip protector. Dan & Matt were seen
dancing in front of goal trying to create those elusive shooting
opportunities and Dan got the assist on the Penguins only goal,
which Ron buried past Weasel's surprised goalie moments before
half-time. Tom was excellent at the back, skillfully blocking
slapshots with his arse. Darren looked like he was more suited
to figure skating than hockey, twirling like a ballerina and
sitting down on the rink a lot more than usual. The MVP clearly
went to Matt the goalie who single-handedly stopped a
massacre of the flightless
birds. The penguins can only hope he doesn't throw in his pads.
The first half was his toughest as the Weasels skated past the
defence like they weren't there, and often they weren't. With
Ron's goal lifting their spirits the half ended at 5-1. The
tired skaters played a competitive second period with a few
opportunities to add to their score. The Weasels had previously
played against higher level teams and were clearly the better
team on the night, but with two more match ups in the regular
season, the Penguins will be eager to get revenge.
